Job Description

GEBE is providing electricity and water to the community of St. Maarten. It strives to become the leading utility company in the Caribbean not only by providing reliable electricity and high quality water but in the future also garbage collection and waste water management services. For GEBE, we are currently looking for a suitable candidate for the position of Internal Legal Counsel (ILC)


The ILC implements, manages and consults on all legal matters concerning GEBE’s corporate activities and ensures GEBE’s interests are protected through the effective management of legal policy integration with other core functions for optimum realization of GEBE’s operational and strategic objectives. The ILC reports to the
President of the Managing Board.

Amongst others, it is the duty of the ILC to:

• Provide active legal contribution to the managing board and department heads to achieve GEBE’s objectives. Develop strategy and improvement proposals concerning legal aspects within GEBE.
• Be responsive to legal queries and actions. Monitors progress in any and all legal proceedings and prosecution.
• Assure conformity and compliance to internal policies and legislative and regulatory requirements.
• Coach department heads regarding legal implications of strategic choices and operational plans and decisions. Advises management on compliance with relevant laws and reviews all contracts to ensure GEBE’s interests are protected. Provide legal advice and support in negotiations.
• Provide risk assessment on legal matters and identify relevant developments and their legal implications.


The ILC needs to have the following minimum qualifications:
• Academic degree in law. (meester in de rechten)
• Knowledge of and experience with Dutch Caribbean law
• 8 years relevant experience as a corporate lawyer/legal advisor with specific regard to corporate, administrative, labor and contract law
• Management skills
• Excellent reporting, communication and people skills
• Thoroughness, pro-active attitude, strategic thinking, analytical capacity, integrity and excellent verbal and written command of English and Dutch.
